Today, Passo Tonale has a fundamental role as both a winter and summer tourist resort in Val di Sole with a high concentration of hotels, apartments, amenities and ski lifts that are almost all located on the northern side of this mountain pass which receieves the greatest amount of sunlight.

Through the years, Passo Tonale has become a favorite training area for many skiing champions, both for downhill skiing and Nordic skiing.

The meadows surrounding Passo Tonale are excellent starting points for numerous lovely excursions, or where you can also take one of the lifts that are open in the summer: one of the most striking itineraries is the hike up to the small lakes which are located in the Presena glacier-bed, therefore reaching the Capanna Presena mountain hut, at a height of almost 3000 meters, then the hike up to the Presanella mountain, to Passo Paradiso where you will find a monument dedicated to all those that died during WWI; on the other side of the mountain pass you can hike up to the Albiolo peaks, another battle area where many war barracks and trenches can still be seen.

A visit to the Ossuary in Passo Tonale is definitely recommended. It was built back in 1924 on the current border between the Trentino and Lombardy region, which was once the border between the Austro Hungarian Empire and the Kingdom of Italy; the remains of 831 soldiers, that fought during WWI in the Tonale area, have been placed here.
